Prof. MMag. Dr Alfred Gutschelhofer
(Deputy Centre Director)
Alfred Gutschelhofer researches entrepreneurship and corporate development with a special focus on academic start-ups and their promotion in Styria. He is Professor and Head of the Institute for Corporate Management and Entrepreneurship and former Rector of the University of Graz. Under his leadership, the first start-up office was initiated at a university together with the Styrian Economic Chamber to promote academic start-ups. In 2022, he was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold of the Republic of Austria.
Promotion of academic start-ups
In co-operation with the Styrian Chamber of Commerce (WKO), the first start-up office was set up at the University of Graz to support academic spin-offs. This project aims to promote the establishment and growth of start-ups in the academic environment, as these create twice as many jobs on average as other company start-ups. The initiative includes financial support, the reduction of bureaucracy and the strengthening of the network for founders. These measures are intended to pave the way for innovation and strengthen economic development in the region.
Industry-university co-operations
This project deals with the success factors of co-operation between industry and universities. It aims to promote innovation processes and efficiently translate academic knowledge into practice. This includes empirical studies to analyse cooperation models, the development of strategies to optimise these partnerships and the practical implementation of research results in cooperation with external partners. This work makes a significant contribution to improving innovative capacity and competitive strength.
